What is the Harmonized System (HS)?
The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, commonly known as the Harmonized System or HS, is a standardized international system for classifying globally traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is used by more than 200 countries and covers over 98% of international merchandise trade.
How HS Codes Are Structured
HS codes follow a hierarchical structure: the first 2 digits identify the chapter, 4 digits identify the heading, and 6 digits identify the subheading. Countries may add additional digits for more specific local classification. This system enables consistent product classification for customs, trade statistics, and regulatory compliance worldwide.
