HS code for Tankless gas water heater: 8419.11
Heaters, instantaneous gas water heaters, for domestic or other purposes.
Classification of tankless gas water heater under HS 8419.11
HS Code 8419.11 applies to instantaneous gas water heaters, commonly referred to as tankless water heaters. These devices heat water as it flows through the unit, rather than storing it in a tank. The classification is based on two primary factors: the heating method (instantaneous) and the fuel source (gas). This code encompasses units used for domestic, commercial, or industrial purposes. Because these units do not rely on a storage tank, they are distinct from storage-type water heaters. The technical design involves a heat exchanger that transfers heat from gas burners directly to the water pipe. Under the Harmonized System, heading 8419 covers machinery and plant for the treatment of materials by a process involving a change of temperature. Subheading 8419.11 is specifically carved out for gas-operated instantaneous heaters. This includes both natural gas and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) models. The classification is determined by the functional mechanism of heating the water immediately upon demand rather than maintaining a reservoir of hot water.

Codes often confused with 8419.11
Common mistake. Tankless gas water heaters are often confused with HS Code 8419.19, which is for non-gas instantaneous heaters (such as those using solid fuels). More commonly, they are confused with HS Code 8516.10, which covers electric instantaneous or storage water heaters. If the unit uses electricity as the primary heat source, it must go under 8516. If it uses gas, it must go under 8419.11. Additionally, gas storage water heaters (with tanks) are classified under 8419.19.

How these figures are built
109 countries reported 2025 trade to UN Comtrade in HS 2022, and their own totals are used. Countries that did not report are estimated from what other countries recorded trading with them. Those estimates miss trade with other non-reporting countries, so they can be low, and a non-reporting country can rank higher than shown or be missing from the list. World totals add both and leave out trade between two non-reporting countries. Figures are in current US dollars; reported imports are mostly valued CIF and exports FOB, and exports include re-exports. The UN Comtrade links show the underlying records; they can also list a few reporters left out here (regional groups and older HS editions).
