Lamps and light fittings, parts thereof, of plastics.
Classification of plastic lampshade under HS 9405.92
Plastic lampshades are classified under HS code 9405.92, which pertains to parts of lamps and lighting fittings made of plastics. Chapter 94 covers furniture, bedding, and lamps, and heading 9405 specifically addresses lamps and lighting fittings including searchlights and spotlights. The classification follows GRI 1 and GRI 6, identifying the product as a part of a larger lighting system. Because the lampshade is a dedicated component designed to diffuse or direct light, it is excluded from general plastic headings in Chapter 39. The material composition (plastic) is the secondary determinant that leads to the specific subheading 9405.92. This code applies regardless of whether the lampshade is for a domestic floor lamp, an industrial light, or a decorative fixture, provided it does not contain electrical components itself, which might shift the classification toward a complete lamp assembly.

Codes often confused with 9405.92
Common mistake. A frequent misclassification occurs when importers use HS code 3926.90, which is a catch-all for other articles of plastics. However, because the item is an identifiable part of a lamp, Chapter 94 takes precedence over Chapter 39 according to Note 2(n) to Section XV. Another common error is confusing plastic shades with glass shades, which fall under 9405.91. Additionally, if the lampshade is imported as part of a complete lamp, the entire unit should be classified under the appropriate code for the lamp (e.g., 9405.11 or 9405.21), rather than classifying the shade separately under 9405.92.

How these figures are built
109 countries reported 2025 trade to UN Comtrade in HS 2022, and their own totals are used. Countries marked * did not, so their figures add up what other countries recorded trading with them, and their exports are valued at buyers' CIF prices. Those estimates miss trade with other non-reporting countries, so they can be low, and a non-reporting country can rank higher than shown or be missing from the list. World totals add both and leave out trade between two non-reporting countries. Figures are in current US dollars; reported imports are mostly valued CIF and exports FOB, and exports include re-exports. The UN Comtrade links show the underlying records; they can also list a few reporters left out here (regional groups and older HS editions).
