If you’re involved in international trade, you’ve likely encountered both “HS code” and “HTS code.” While related, they serve different purposes. Here’s a clear breakdown.
HS Code — The Global Standard
The Harmonized System (HS) is maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and used by over 200 countries. It provides a standardized 6-digit code for classifying traded goods.
- Digits 1-2: Chapter (e.g., 84 = Machinery)
- Digits 3-4: Heading (e.g., 8471 = Data processing machines)
- Digits 5-6: Subheading (e.g., 847130 = Portable computers)
The first 6 digits are the same worldwide. When you see “HS code,” it refers to this universal classification.
HTS Code — The US Extension
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is the United States’ version. It takes the global 6-digit HS code and extends it to 10 digits for more specific classification and duty rate assignment.
- Digits 1-6: Same as global HS code
- Digits 7-8: US-specific subheading
- Digits 9-10: Statistical suffix
For example:
847130— Global HS code for portable computers8471.30.0100— HTS code specifically for laptops valued under a threshold
